Complex
Motion Tomography
What is it?
In 2001,
a "complex motion tomography" machine was installed in our office.
What
is Tomography:
Tomography is an x-ray process that provides the doctor with layered views
or "slices" or "cuts" of anatomical structures. These
"slices" or "cuts" are superior to most plain film
techniques, because they allow the doctor to see underlying structures
that are obstructed on conventional x-rays.
Here's
an example:
In the TMJ, or the jaw joint, tomography can yield a tremendous amount
of even subclinical information about the fossacondylar (ball-socket)
relationship because of its capability to narrowly slice through the condyle
(the jaw bone). Tomography is also used to obtain slices" through
the jaw in cross-section, enabling the doctor to determine positioning
for dental implants.
What else can
it do?
Our new x-ray machine also
takes static or plain films, for instance, of the head or neck, just like
in the hospital. However, for all of the x-ray images, the radiation dosage
is one thousand times less than in the hospital! And that's not including
a comparison to CAT scans, which expose the patient to hundreds of times
more radiation.
More services
available right in our office.
We do not have to send our
patients to the hospital or radiology clinic any longer, except when an
MRI is indicated.
Once again we're
investing in technology so we can treat our patients with state-of-the-art
equipment for the "gold standard" of care.
